The short version: no account, no login, no analytics, no ads, and no tracking. Your personal things — saved meetings, event bookmarks, and notification preferences — never leave your phone. The only information the app keeps anywhere is what you type yourself, and only the Dry Dock's administrators can see it.
The Dry Dock ("we," "us," or "the Dock") is for members of the recovering community and focuses on San Francisco. This policy supports our commitment to anonymity, and is the reason we do not collect any information the user has not chosen to give us.
What stays only on your device
These features run entirely on your phone and are never transmitted to us or anyone else:
- Saved meetings and notification preferences — which meetings you have bookmarked.
- Event bookmarks and reminders — events you have saved and the local reminders for them.
- Your reaction and RSVP history — the app remembers on your phone which posts you have reacted to and which events you have RSVP'd to, so you can undo them; this record never leaves your device.
- Calendar events you add — if you choose "Add to Calendar," the event goes straight into your phone's calendar; we never see it.
If you delete the app, this on-device information is deleted with it.
What we collect, and why
We only collect information in the specific situations below. Everything we collect is visible only to the Dock's administrators; it is never used for advertising or profiling, and it is never sold to third parties.
1. RSVP "Going" to an event
To reserve a spot and let the organizer plan headcount, we collect:
- Your first name
- Your last-name initial
- How many spots you're reserving (party size — a number, nothing more)
- The payment method you self-report for paid events (Venmo, PayPal, or cash at the door)
We do not collect your phone number. The RSVP record holds nothing that identifies your device, and it is not connected to your other RSVPs or submissions. Other members never see it — they only see anonymous counts.
2. "Interested" in an event, or a reaction to a post
If you mark yourself Interested in an event or react to a post, we store an anonymous count only — no name, nothing that identifies you.
3. Suggestion Box
You can send feedback anonymously. Your name, phone, and email are all optional. Leave them blank and your suggestion is fully anonymous. If you fill them in, the Dock's admins can reply to you directly.
4. Push notifications (opt in)
If you turn on notifications for categories like New events, Announcements, or Sandy's Corner, your device registers an anonymous notification token. The token is the address the notification service uses to reach your device — it contains no personal information and is not linked to your name, your RSVP details, or any other data. We cannot tell who a token belongs to. If you turn notifications off, the token is removed.
If you bookmark an event, mark yourself Interested, or RSVP Going, the app also adds an anonymous topic for that event to your token's subscription list, so that updates about that event reach the people following it. The topic is only the event's ID — it carries no name and is not connected to your RSVP record. Undoing the bookmark or RSVP removes it.
What the app does not collect
- We do not use analytics, crash-reporting, or advertising of any kind. No third-party usage tracking is embedded in the app.
- We do not collect device identifiers to profile you or store cross-event user profiles.
- We do not show ads or share data with advertisers.
- We do not sell your personal information.
- We do not require or offer accounts for app users.
- We do not access your location. The Meetings tab shows a published schedule; the app never reads your location.
- We do not collect donation information, including the amount or who gave it.
- We do not read or upload your contacts. The app never accesses your address book.
- We do not read the contents of your calendar. On iOS, adding an event uses Apple's own calendar sheet, so the app is never granted calendar access. On Android, the OS grants calendar read and write access as a single permission group, and only when you add an event — the app briefly checks calendar names to find where to add the event, but it never reads, displays, or transmits your existing events.
Payments and donations. We do not process or store any card, bank, or payment-account details. Payment for paid events is handled entirely by Venmo/PayPal under their own privacy policies; the app only records the method you tell us you used. Card donations are processed by our partners Fundraise Up and Authorize.Net under their own privacy policies.
Where data is stored and who can see it
Any data collected as described above is stored securely in our database (Supabase, a hosted Postgres database in the United States), protected by row-level security. The app can only submit an RSVP or a suggestion — it cannot read anyone's submissions back. Only the Dock's authorized administrators can view the database, through a password-protected admin panel.
Third-party partner services
- Supabase — the database hosting the app's content, used exclusively by the administrators (announcements, events, meeting schedule).
- Apple Push Notification service / Expo — delivers app notifications.
- Apple App Store — distributes the app and provides the Dock's administrators aggregate, anonymous usage stats.
- Google Play — distributes the app and provides aggregate, anonymous stats via Play Console.
- Venmo / PayPal — process payments for paid events and donations under their own privacy policies.
- Fundraise Up / Authorize.Net — process card donations through the donation form on our website, under their own privacy policies.
- Google Sheets — the source of the public meeting schedule we display. This is a one-way read of a public schedule; no member data is ever sent to it.
Retention and deletion
- Going RSVP details and Suggestion Box submissions are kept so the Dock has a record. The administrator may enable automatic deletion of older records, and if an event is deleted, the RSVP information for that event is deleted along with it.
- You can ask us to delete anything you have submitted. Email info@drydocksf.org, use the Suggestion Box in the app (include contact info if you would like a reply), or find us in person at The Dry Dock, San Francisco.
- Turning off notifications removes your push token; tokens that stop working are removed automatically.
App Store privacy label
For transparency, the app's App Store privacy label reflects the above:
- Data Linked to You — Event RSVP: first name and last initial. Suggestion Box: optional name, phone, and email. Used for app functionality only.
- Data Not Linked to You — the anonymous notification token, used only to deliver the notifications you opt into.
Children's privacy
The app is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. There is no solicitation or engagement between users of the app.
Changes to this policy
If we change what we collect or how we use it, we will update this page and the "Last updated" date above. Material changes will be noted in the app.
